Progress check-in!
Hi, it has been almost half of the school year, so I am checking in on my progress for my signature project.
From the last week of December up till the first week of February, I wasn’t able to go teach the music/art classes at Hope7 due to the covid restrictions from Emma. Throughout that time, I tried to plan my lessons ahead of time, so I could at least get to work right away once I was able to go teach again. From February 10th, I got my confirmation to go off-campus, so I will be continuing my classes.
Nothing much has changed from the timeline, that I posted back at the beginning of my signature program, except for the fact that I lost five weeks of class time with the kids.
I will be continuing my lessons with the same group of kids on Tuesday/Thursday and keep my website updated on the lesson plans and how the classes went.
(one thing I am hoping for is having another Emma Willard student join me in going to teach at Hope 7 )
February #2
In hopes of introducing a new celebration to the children at hope 7, this month's theme was Black History Month.
Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements/accomplishments by African Americans in this land and a time to recognize their central part in the history/formation of the U.S.
In my class, I introduced the renowned black artist Jean-Michel Basquiat and we re-created one of his famous artworks "Flexible" (1984).
Lesson_learn about Jean-Michel Basquiat and recreate one of his artworks
Supplies_ black acrylic paint, water, thick white paper (A4 size), pastels, one or two colorful paints
We started off by watching a 3-minute video about Jean-Mitchel Basquiat's life. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ELjugsxUys&ab_channel=CRNRiderNews)
Then, I went through step by step how to recreate his artwork with the class. The students were really focused and patiently waited for their turn with the paintbrush. I think they were all really determined to create their piece of unique artwork, through the flexible style of Basquiat.
Here are some examples of student artwork.
